Benefits
Step into the sunlight with Colombian Gold, also known as Santa Marta Colombian Gold. This mesmerising landrace strain hails from the tranquil Santa Marta Mountains in Colombia. It routinely checks in at 17-22% THC content and delivers a classic, pure sativa experience. You will experience a clear-headed, energising high that will make you want to get things done.
Onset
Colombian Gold delivers an experience that shines as brightly as gold. However, its effects are rather slow, like a gentle breeze of euphoria gradually washing over your mind. You’ll notice an uplifting sensation that stimulates creativity and heightens the senses whilst also experiencing subtle body relaxation, releasing all the tension. Although soothing, Colombian Gold doesn’t shackle you to your seat, leaving ample room to indulge in creative and engaging activities. This is one of the best strains if you need to get things done, as it provides a clear-headed, intellectually stimulating high that facilitates deep focus.
Keep in mind that the cerebral boost is so intense the eventual comedown may wear you out as your body and mind restore the energy. For that reason, Colombian Gold will work best as an afternoon delight, and it might even help you sleep peacefully later that same night.
If you appreciate this cerebral boost, you may also like Sour Diesel or Durban Poison strains.
Uses
Colombian Gold has a plethora of potential medical benefits, especially in the mental sphere. Its strength lies in its ability to support a clear-headed focus that helps you get through your tasks. As such, it may be highly appreciated by individuals dealing with ADHD.
With a high content of energising and uplifting limonene, it can be an excellent remedy for fatigue and depression. It also facilitates relaxation and can significantly reduce stress levels and symptoms of anxiety.
Side effects
Cottonmouth is the most commonly reported side effect of Colombian Gold consumption. It may also trigger paranoia and anxiety in sensitive individuals, so it is essential to proceed cautiously, especially for beginners. Start with low doses and gradually increase them if needed.
It is best to use Colombian Gold early enough at night. Otherwise, it may keep you up longer than you wished for.
Taste & Smell
Colombian Gold displays a typical sativa structure, with its large spring green, chunky buds. Thanks to the abundance of vivid amber trichomes, the plants have a beautiful golden hue – reflected in their name.
The strain’s aroma is pungent and easily detectable, with a solid skunky odour. This is complemented by lime undertones that reveal themselves upon breaking the buds. You will sense an earthy, spicy aroma as soon as you light it up. The smoke itself is heavy on the throat and lungs and may induce some coughing. However, its taste makes up for the harshness, with a tangy, citrus herbal inhale and a skunky note on the exhale.
Origins
The full name of the strain, Santa Marta Colombian Gold, is a tribute to the beautiful Santa Marta Mountains range where the landrace was cultivated. It instantly became widely popular after being brought to the US from Colombia in the 1960s. While the strain is not nearly as famous today as it used to be back in the day, it has secured a solid place in cannabis history as a mother strain of a few popular creations, such as the famous Skunk #1.

Growing conditions
As a landrace strain, Colombian Gold is sturdy and straightforward to grow, with a high tolerance for mould and diseases. The bigger challenge would be finding the seeds, as the strain is hard to come by nowadays. Getting a clipping for cloning would probably be the best bet.
The strain will thrive best outdoors in conditions similar to its native Colombian climate – in a humid, moderately warm environment. It grows tall, up to 1.8m, so it may require occasional trimming.
A slow plant to flower, you can expect harvest within 10 to 12 weeks, with a yield of around 400 grams per square metre indoors and 500 grams per plant outdoors.
